Year 6B

Welcome to Year 6B!

If – Year 6

If you can keep your grip, when all about you

Are losing theirs and trying to pull you down,

If you can believe in yourself, when all others doubt you,

 But give support to those same doubters too;

If you can write and not be tired by writing,

Or be lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being criticised, don’t give way to insults

And yet still look really noble, and sound all-wise:

If you can read—and not make books your master;

If you can spell—and not make errors all the same;

If you can meet with Homework and Revision

And treat those two inconveniences just the same;

If you can bear to see the words you’ve written

Marked by teachers to make more challenges for you,

Or watch the models you spent all afternoon making, photo’d,

    And evaluated and fix ’em up with worn-out pritt-sticks:

Or watch the PE lesson you spent all afternoon waiting for,

Disappear because you forgot your PE kit yet again:

If you use the subjunctive verb form;

     When all around you are using the passive voice.

If you can sell tuck shop, and not take one for yourself

But give the wrong change, and correct yourself

And never breathe a word about your error;

If you can force your pen and pencil and ruler

To solve your problems long after the staff have gone,

And so carry on when there is no-one with you

Except the laptops which says to you: ‘Bitesize!’

If you can talk in assembly and act in pantomimes,

Or walk for miles—nor lose your high-viz jacket,

If neither nursery children nor Year 6 staff can scare you,

If all buddies work with you, but none too much;

If you can fill the unforgiving minute

With sixty seconds’ worth of revision done,

Yours is the School and everything that’s in it,

And—which is more—you’ll be a Year 6 pupil, my friends!

If - Year 6

An inspirational poem, based on the Kipling classic, performed by our class of 2016.
