MFL - Spanish 2021 Onwards

Our Philosophy:

At Brighton Avenue Primary School we believe that teaching the children a modern foreign language helps to develop their language and creativity. A high quality language education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of the different and diverse cultures we have today. As part of the new Primary National Curriculum, which took effect from September 2014, learning a modern foreign language has become a requirement for children within KS2. At Brighton Avenue we have decided to teach Spanish throughout our curriculum. We are incorporating this through lessons, displays around the school and whole school language and cultural days. At Brighton Avenue we aim to develop our children’s experience of language and encourage curiosity about other languages which are spoken in school. Through teaching in school we want to develop our children’s understanding of what they hear, read and ensure they have the ability to express themselves through verbal and written sessions. We always strive to ensure our children extend their knowledge by understanding how the language works and exploring the differences between Spanish and English.

Our Aims:

The principles of teaching Spanish as our Modern Foreign Language at Brighton Avenue Primary School are consistent with our school philosophy and take into account the National Curriculum Guidance for MFL. (See MFL Policy for further information).

Principles of Teaching Spanish (MFL):

  • To develop our children’s experience of language and encourage curiosity about other languages which are spoken in school.
  • To develop our children’s understanding of what they hear, read and ensure they have the ability to express themselves through verbal and written sessions.
  • To extend our children's knowledge by understanding how the language works and exploring the differences between Spanish and English.
  • To provide a weekly Spanish lesson of 30 minutes to ALL of our Key Stage 2 children.
  • To re-visit and deepen their learning for 5-10 minutes every day with structured language tasks that practise retrieval, improve retention and embed learning in long-term memory. (Power of 3)
  • To provide further opportunities to recycle key vocabulary (e.g. numbers)
  • To develop children’s confidence by building into classroom routines including greetings, providing instructions, stating lunch preferences, registration, rewards and praise on a more regular basis, even just for a few minutes in the school day e.g. when children are lining up.
  • To provide a detailed scheme of work with audio to enable resources for every lesson is provided in order to minimise unnecessary teacher workload.
  • In line with the NC PoS, our children learn to: • Listen and show understanding by joining in and responding

European Day of Languages 2024 smiley

On Thursday 26th September, it was European Day of Languages 2024. It is a day which is a celebration of language learning and cultural diversity - something which is already so important for us in our school!!

The European Day of Languages was first established by the European Council in 2001. The decision to launch the initiative formed part of the European Year of Languages, a campaign designed to promote linguistic awareness and encourage language acquisition across Europe. The event now occurs each year on September 26th and is a celebration of language learning and cultural diversity.

Each class celebrated by doing their own small activity together - take a look below!

World Book Day 2021

Thursday 4th March 2021

Some of our children took part in a virtual Spanish lesson on World Book Day based around the story The BFG by Roald Dahl. We learnt some new vocabulary based around the story and used this to play games and practice our new language.

After just 3 small weeks of learning a new language, look at some of our amazing children having a basic conversation in Spanish! We have been blown away by their efforts and their attitude since beginning to learn Spanish! smiley
