The Reserve Advent Calendar

Dear Parents/ Carers,

This week we have been talking about charity with the children and have been overwhelmed at how much they have engaged in discussions about this topic. They have been great at suggesting things that can be donated to charity and why charities are extremely important, especially at this time of the year. We began to research charities and found a great idea called the reverse advent calendar. This idea highlights that the Christmas period should be just as much about ‘giving’ as it is about ‘receiving’. Please see the attached document for a little more information. As staff this is something we would really like to be part of so we have decided that we are going to form a little collection of food which we will add to everyday and at the end of this term we will donate the food to The People’s Kitchen. We thought it would be a great thing for the children to be part of and will be adding to the collection daily with food that we, as staff, will be bringing in. If you would like to make a small donation from the suggested list, then you are more than welcome but please do not feel any pressure to do so. This is a collective effort from all of year one, lead predominately by donations from the staff. We appreciate that it is a difficult time for many at present. The main objective is the message: that if we are in a position to help others it is a very kind and caring thing to do.

Thanks for your support,

The Year One Team

This week have been beginning to think about rememberance day. We have read a story called 'Where the poppies now grow' and have thought about all the the brave soldiers who have and still do ensure we can live safe lives in our country. We painted some poppy stones and put them in the quiet part of our Outdoor Learning area. These will remind us about the soldiers and the sacrifices they made and continue to make when we see them.

We have a had a super day celebrating Bonfire Night! We made chocolate sparklers, made firework pictures and we even burned a Guy. We also began to make some poppies for our Remembrance display.

Our Autumn Poem

As Summer turns to Autumn I think of,

Tractors on every field.

Fruit and vegetables for everyone,

All the farmers go to work,

It's Harvest Time.

A Summer turns to Autumn I think of,

All the machinery being out,

Lots of people are jumping about,

With peas, leeks, strawberries and more,

It's Harvest Time.

As Summer turns to Autumn I think of,

Sharing with people I love.

Thanking God from up above,

Thankful for everything I have,

It's Harvest Time.

We have had another super 'Wild Wednesday'. This week we had a scary theme. We built a spooky house in our den building area and we tried to cross the crocodile swap. We also looked for mini-beasts and planted some onions that were kindly donated by Magnus' family. We developed our tool work skill by using hammers and nails. Finally we made spooky potions in our mud kitchen area.
On Wednesday we had some music visitors and we clapped some beats along to some amazing songs!
In P.E we done sensory circuit! We hopped around cones like a frog, we jogged on the spot, we made our way carefully across a spider web (we didn't want the spider to get us), we balanced across a bench, we were sausage rolls, we did the hoola hoop and finally we did some halloween yoga!
We created pumpkin dot art inspired by Yayoi Kusama. She is known for her use of polka dots on her artwork!

We've been thinking about World Mental Health Day. We thought about what mental health is and how to look after our own mental health. We had to find our own happiness 'balloon'. It was hard to do on our own so we worked together and we all found them. We realized working together and talking about how we felt helped us to find our 'happiness'.
On Tuesday we did sensory circuit in PE. Look at us go!

Phew!! What an amazing first week we have had back at school. The children have all been amazing and have settled back into routine fantastically. We have spent the week getting to know each other, exploring our new learning environment and rekindling all of our friendships. It has been fantastic to see the children socialising and spending quality time with each other.

Some of the activities children have taken part in this week include:

  • 'talking table' activity exploring emotions around their experiences of COVID and lockdown
  • writing a postcard about their experiences of lockdown
  •  reading lots of stories about emotions and how to manage emotions we are feeling. We have had a particular focus on the story 'Colour Monster' this week.
  •  The children have spent lots of time exploring the indoor and outdoor environment.

Can we take this opportunity to thank you all for your support in easing your children back into the school routine. We look forward to working with you all this year.

  • If you haven't done so, please provide your child with a pair of wellies that can stay at school
  • Please fill in the forms we have sent out this week
  •  Please send in a family photo for our class photo album we are creating. The photo album will stay in our reading area and we hope all of the children can share their photographs. We would love for everyone to be part of this.
