Welcome to the Year 1S class page!
BANG!
You have just arrived at the best class on EARTH'S page! This year in 1S, we will be going on a huge journey with our learning. We will be working incredibly hard but also having a lot of fun too!! Please check back regularly for updates on all the exciting things we will be doing this year!
Week beginning 11th July 2022
This month is our S.T.E.A.M focus month and we've been participating in different activities that cover one (or more) of the 5 strands: Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. Supporting and encouraging such activities allows children to their build confidence through challenge. We offer opportunities to investigate, explore, problem solve, think independently and evaluate along the way. Such skills are important in order for children to develop into confident, resilient young people.
In D.T. we've been building up to making our own smoothies. We began by finding out where different fruits and vegetables come from and how to distinguish between the two - fruits have seeds and vegetables do not! After cutting up a selection of different fruit and vegetables, we tasted them to decide which ones we liked and disliked. We then chose our favourites to make our own smoothies. As you can see, some of the smoothies tasted better than others!
In Science, we've been keeping our very own bean diaries! Firstly, we looked at the life cycle of a bean, then discussed what plants need to grow. After that, we planted our own beans and predicted how tall we thought they'd grow. We recorded this in our diaries. Each week we have been keeping track of their growth and considering what will help them grow faster. For example, we placed one bean plant in the cupboard and another on the windowsill. We watered them both regularly and found out some interesting facts. Lucy (the plant in the cupboard) grew tallest but was yellow! It grew in the direction of the light in the hope of reaching it!
We learnt that the bean needs water, soil and light to grow.
We ended our week with Phil and had a fantastic Friday morning with lots of learning opportunities. There was a rope swing, a hammock, mark making, bubble making, dominoes, connect 4, tyre rolling and mud pies!

What a great day we had at Brocksbushes learning all about different fruits and how they're grown. The weather was beautiful as we walked up and down the rows of fruit, picking and tasting redcurrants, blackcurrants, gooseberries and strawberries! We also had the opportunity to take a punnet home for our grown ups too, all freshly picked by our very own little hands!
