Week Beginning 10th March 2025

This week, the children have been learning all about light in Science. We investigated the reflectiveness of different materials and made predictions as what we thought the best materials would be to help us be seen at night when travelling through the streets. We then tested our predictions using the log boxes to measure the amount of light being reflected off different surfaces. We found that the smoothest, most colourful and shiniest materials reflected the most amount of light.

In PE, we continued our work on bridges in gymnastics. The children took their learning from last week and extended it onto apparatus. We worked on making our bridges strong and even managed to create bridges with our partners. Take a look at some of the photos below! They were amazing! We also spent time at Gateshead Library choosing new books to read in school.

Remember that next week we are visiting Jarrow Hall to explore the life and daily routines of Anglo-Saxon villagers. We are very excited!!!

Pupil of the Week - 14th March 2025

A huge well done to Mariya and Rameen who are this week's Pupils of the Week. Both girls have really impressed us with their attitudes towards their learning. Rameen's resilience when completing her times tables assessments has been incredible. She has not stopped until she has scored full marks and is determined to continue in this way. Mariya has been amazing when completing her work in lessons and will always ask for help if she is stuck. She always gives 100% and we couldn't be prouder of the work she has produced! Well done to you both!

Week Beginning 3rd March 2025

What a fantastic first week back we have had. We have started our unit of work all about play scripts in English. The children identified the features of scripts before acting out and writing our own plays. We will continue to identify features and apply them in our own writing. We also started our unit of work on light in Science and cafe language in Spanish.

We also had our amazing STEAM visit to Cooplands bakery. The children got to have a tour of the bakery, learning about the different processes involved in creating baked goods and tasty treats. We learned about the whole design process in creating these food items, linking it to the work we did back in the Autumn term where we designed and made our very own biscuits. We also had the chance to ice our own biscuits! It was an amazing visit and we can't thank the staff enough for making us feel so welcome!

Year 4B Vending Machine - Spring 1

Congratulation to Maliah and Tamara who have won our half termly vending machine competition. Both girls have been outstanding with their reading, completing many of the weekly Reading Eggs challenges and always having their reading records brought in and signed. Well done girls! Enjoy your books!

Week Beginning 17th February 2025

What an amazing last week we have had. We have had so much fun completing our art unit. We learned about 'Fabric of Nature' and the work of William Morris. The children took inspiration from nature and their mood boards, which they created in a previous lesson, to make their very own repeating pattern. We then used our designs to create beautiful furnishing designs, just like the arts and crafts movement of the 1800s.

We also completed our Science unit on sound. The children learned about the work of musicians Nile Rodgers and Charlie Puth who both manipulate sounds to create amazing pieces of music. We then learned about the work of 'Foley Artists' who create amazing sounds to place over the top of films and tv shows. The children had a go at creating their own soundtracks to a film. You can see how they got on below.

Finally, the children completed their unit of work in PE where Mr Smith has been teaching them how to create expressive movements to replicate being in Space. The children learned about moving in unison, canon and also individually or in groups to make a powerful dance. We are very impressed with what they have created! Well done everyone!

Thank you all once again for your support this half term and we hope you have a wonderful half term holiday. We will see you on Monday 3rd March, ready for Spring 2!

Pupil of the Week - 14th February 2025

A huge well done to Evan and Ester who are this week's Pupil's of the Week! Evan has made such amazing process since arriving at our school in Year 3 and has continued to shine in Year 4. He was a huge part of our recent inspection and is an inspiration to all of the other children. Ester has also demonstrated a fantastic attitude towards her learning over the past few weeks. She has resilience in bundles and we are so impressed with her commitment to being the best she can be. Well done to the 2 of you!

Week Beginning 10th February 2025

WOW!!!!! WHAT A WEEK!!!!! It's no understatement that we couldn't be prouder of our children. Year 4B have shone in everything they have done and we are so lucky to have them. Not only did they knock the socks off our visitors, but they also shone during their visit to the Discovery Museum on Wednesday. We received an email from the staff at the museum telling us that both Year 4 classes were amongst the best they have every had visit. Amazing!

During the visit, the children had the chance to explore the museum's many amazing artefacts, took part in a sound workshop and learned so much about the history of Newcastle/Gateshead and the world around us. Well done to you all!

Week Beginning 3rd February 2025

This week, we have continued our work on newspaper reports in English. The children were able to write their own reports about Humpty who recovered from falling off the wall. We used the correct layout features and made sure to order the events in chronological order, as well as including journalistic language and quotes from people involved. We finished the week by asking the children to write their own newspaper reports about a fairy tale of their choosing.

In maths, we entered the world of statistics. We learned about the difference between discrete and continuous data before collecting and presenting our very own data using bar charts and time graphs. We also completed our weekly times table assessments which we were very proud of everyone as their scores just seem to be increasing week after week! We are super proud of you all!

In Spanish, we completed our unit on 'Weather' by writing our own weather forecasts for Spain. The children used a range of Spanish phrases including compass directions, weather types, place names as well as general greetings to create fluent forecasts. The videos of these forecasts will be available to watch very soon.

Finally, on Wednesday afternoon, we went on an 'Eco Walk' around the school and surrounding areas. Our task was to walk for 5 minutes in 2 different directions (North and East) and see where we ended up. We then used our map reading skills to work out where we were. This, along with work completed by the other Year 4 class, will create a resource available to families very soon.

Stay and Play - Wednesday 5th February 2025

A huge thank you to all of the parents and carer who came to the Stay and Play session on Wednesday morning. We spent time thinking about our tech timetables, how much we are using technology in our homes and whether it was a positive or negative use. We then spent time thinking about Children's Mental Health Week (Your Voice Matters) and completing some creative tasks as well as a body scanner. It was a brilliant morning and we can't wait for the next one!

Pupil of the Week - 31st January 2025

A huge well done to Leo and Nadin who are this week’s Pupils of the Week. Leo has really impressed us with his commitment to improving his writing. He created a fantastic twisted fairy tale which included a wide range of writing targets and was extremely engaging to read. Well done Leo! Nadin is a fantastic member of the class and has worked incredibly hard in every lesson. She showed amazing resilience when telling the time in maths and is always willing to share ideas in lessons. Well done Nadin.

Cricket Taster Session

This week, the children took part in a cricket taster session run by Durham County Cricket Club. Shaz came in and taught the children how to bowl, bat and catch a cricket ball as well as playing some energetic warm up games. She told us that every Tuesday evening, at Gateshead Leisure Centre, she will be running a FREE cricket session for families to take part in. For more information, contact the Leisure Centre directly. Well done everyone!

Week Beginning - 27th January 2025

Another very busy week in Year 4B. The children continued their swimming lessons in the pool (a huge thank you to the parents who have come to support). They have been split into smaller groups and moved to different parts of the pool. Each group are building on skills from the previous week and are showing much more confidence every time we go.

We explored the link between volume and the size of the vibrations in Science. The children used a wide range of instruments to create a soundscape representing a storm. They had to use their knowledge of vibrations and sound waves to make loud and quiet sounds in combination with the noises of a storm. It certainly wasn't a peaceful lesson!!!

In Maths, we have been learning how to tell the time using an analogue clock face to the nearest minute before converting them to 24 hour time. It can be a very confusing task but the children have stuck at it and are much more confident in this skill. In English, we have started our unit of work on newspaper reports. We have looked at the features of newspaper reports before learning how to write engaging headlines, information introductions and even performed their very own TV style news report.

In Spanish, we have continued to learn how to describe the weather and listen to a Spanish weather report. We translated it into English before writing our own sentences in Spanish to describe what the weather is like and where it is using the 4 compass points.

Another amazing week Year 4B! Remember we have our second Stay and Play next Wednesday morning so we are looking forward to seeing as many parents/carers as possible!

Week Beginning - 20th January 2025

This week, the children completed their unit of work in narrative writing by creating their own version of Humpty Dumpty. We will be sharing these with you once the children have finished adding their illustrations and proof reading their incredible stories. We have started looking at newspaper reports and came up with some amazing headlines on Friday.

In Maths, we have started learning about measurements with a focus on perimeter. We took part in some practical measurements around the classroom using a range of measuring equipment. In Science, we continued our work on sound by investigating pitch. We learned that smaller, shorter objects make high sounds and longer, bigger objects make low sounds. We are also very excited to go on our trip to the Discovery Museum where we will learn more about out sound.

In Geography, the children learned about climate graphs. We discovered that different parts of the world have very different climates, including temperature and rainfall, and were able to compare these. Finally, in Music, the children revisited a piece of music from the Autumn Term, "I want to sing skat..." and focussed on the rests in between the notes.

Another amazing week Year 4! Keep it up!

Week Beginning - 13th January 2025

This week, the children began by taking part in a Muddy Monsters session with Phil and Mr Smith. The children reinforced their den building skills as well as having the opportunity to play in our Forest School area.

Throughout the week, the children have continued their learning in a range of subject areas. In English, we have written diary entries as Humpty Dumpty after he had fallen off the wall. We described how his life has changed and what he is going to do to get himself back on the wall again. In Maths, we have focused our learning on coordinates and compass directions.

The children also had a fantastic swimming lesson with Mr Smith and the amazing swimming teachers at Gateshead Leisure Centre. They were able to reinforce skills from last week and are a credit to the school whenever they go. In PE, we have introduced the term 'canon' to our dance vocabulary and the children were able to use this technique within their routines.

In Geography, we have started to learn about climates in the UK and discovered why the west of the country receives more rain tan the east. We will take this knowledge forward with us as we learn more about the weather and climates from across the world.

Another amazing week everyone! Well done!

Pupil of the Week - 17th January 2025

A HUGE well done to our first Pupils of the Week of 2025: Lisseth and Bryan. Both children have had an amazing start to the half term and we couldn't be prouder of them! Since arriving at Brighton Avenue, Bryan has continued to settle well and is starting to really understand the way we hold ourselves when in the classroom and on the playground. He has given his all in lessons and is really showing us what he can do. Lisseth is an absolute superstar and always gives 100% in everything she does. We can always rely on her to be a good friend and will never give up on difficult challenges. Well done to you both!

Week Beginning 6th January 2025

Happy New Year to you all! What an amazing first week back we have had. The children have picked up right where they left off in December and we have such an exciting half term planned.

The biggest change this week was our swimming lessons. I have been told by Mr Gallagher that the children were AMAZING in the water and had a brilliant time. It can be very nervy trying something or experiencing new or unfamiliar things but we couldn't be prouder of all the children's efforts. Remember to have ALL of your swimming things ready every Monday to bring into school.

We have started our unit in English all about traditional tales, but not always as you would expect. We are learning about a certain Hunpty Dumpty's life after he has fallen off the wall. Who knew how difficult his life would be! The children have written diary entries as Humpty telling us all about how his life has changed and how he wishes to be back on the wall with his beloved birds. In Maths, we have continued work on shapes (including symmetry) and in Science, we are learning all about Sound!

We have started learning about Yom Kippur in RE and even got to taste some food with Mis Greaves! Finally, in PE, Mr Smith has begun working with the children on their dance technique; staying in character and preforming movements which portray the theme of 'Space'. What an incredible week! We have done so much!!! Have a lovely weekend everyone and we will see you on Monday!

We used a range of sentence openers and conjunctions to compare both of the poems and gave our opinions on them. In Science, we have been learning how to classify living things using classification diagrams using 'yes' or 'no' questions. We had great fun trying to find out unknown animals although we had a few laughs when some children thought a cow was an insect... We got there in the end!

In PE, we have started learning how to play the sport of hockey. The children have developed their grip technique on the stick as well as how we control the ball using the correct posture. We focused on dribbling and passing at first before starting to have mini games. We have been very impressed with how well many of the children have picked up the sport and can't wait to complete the unit over the next few weeks.

A huge thank you to everyone who was able to come to our Stay and Play as well. We had a fantastic morning in the Community Room creating our winter silhouette pictures. Take a look at the photos below and you will see just what we got up to.

On Friday, we took part in a VERY exciting DT/STEAM day where the children were tasked with making a slingshot car. They were given materials and some ideas but it was up to them to decide how to make their cars work. We explored the different jobs that were required to make a successful Formula 1 team and what we would need to do in school to end up in these careers. We were so impressed with the children's resilience and teamwork when making their slingshot cars.

An amazing week Year 4! Well done!

Pupil of the Week - Friday 8th November 2024

A huge congratulations to Harry and Adwoba who are this week's Pupils of the Week. Adwoba has continued to shine as an amazing pupil within our school and has such an amazing attitude towards her learning. We couldn't be prouder of how hard she works and how much of a lovely young girl she is.

Harry's award is a little bit more special. He is not only a model pupil in school but he is also a hero! When his mum needed help, he was able to remain calm, phoned an ambulance and helped to look after other members of his family. He has shown maturity beyond measure and we all couldn't be prouder of Harry!

Week Beginning - 14th October 2024

Edward has shone in his PE lessons; demonstrating outstanding teamwork skills by volunteering to carry out roles that others weren't and not complaining at all. He was a fantastic team player and was also supporting his teammates throughout. Maliah has knocked our socks off in all areas but in particular her maths. She has not shied away from any difficult challenges and is always looking to improve. Well done to you both!

Week Beginning - 7th October 2024

This week, we have been incredibly busy once again in Year 4B. In English, we concluded our unit of work all about historical writing; using the text 'Roman Rescue' as our hook into learning. The children had to rewrite one of the moments in the story using their own ideas, vocabulary and sentences to hook the reader and to paint a picture in their heads. Their stories were incredible and showed a fantastic use of imagination.

In maths, we have moved into the world of fractions by learning about unit and non unit fractions before learning how to count in tenths and even hundredths. The children also continued their push on mastering their times table knowledge with another assessment. Keep going with those tables Year 4! The more you know, the further you'll go!

In Science, we gave the children an opportunity to design their very own magnetic games, applying their newly found knowledge or how magnets work as a non contact force. In PE, we concluded our unit on tactics and communication by trying to work as a team to overcome some difficult challenges. We had a big push on supporting our teammates instead of getting upset when things weren't going well.

In Art, we have begun our unit of work all about sketching curved surfaces. You can see in the photos some of the children's work which include sketches of ribbons which it not easy to do. They explored different techniques to create shade and highlights.

Well done Year 4! Another incredible week!

Pupil of the Week - Friday 20th September 2024

A huge congratulations to Tamara and James who are this week's Pupils of the Week. James has had an INCREDIBLE start to life in Year 4. He is such a polite and kind-hearted young man who always gives 100% to his work. We can't wait to see what else James has to offer the class this year. Tamara has also settled into life in Year 4 with ease. Her smile has been infectious and she has shone during her first couple of weeks in our class. Well done to the two of you!

Week Beginning - 16th September 2024

This week, the children have continued their work learning about forces and magnets in Science. We carried out an investigation into contact and non-contact forces and making observations based on what we saw. In PE, Mr Smith worked with the class to discover what it means to be part of a team and how to use tactics to cause the opposition a problem.

We have also begun our English and Maths work. We have started to read 'Roman Rescue' and the children learned how to write detailed setting descriptions using fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases. In Maths, we have learned about place value and how we can round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000.

On Monday, we also took part in the first Muddy Monsters session of the year. The children built on skills they developed last year in creating strong lashings to fix 2 pieces of wood. They also had the opportunity to play within our forest school area. What a fantastic week Year 4B!

Pupil of the Week  - Friday 13th September 2024

A huge congratulations to Keira and Kyrin who are this week's Pupils of the Week. Both children have had an amazing start to life in Year 4 and we couldn't be prouder of them. He was able to apply new techniques independently to create a stunning still life! Well done to the 2 of you!

Week Beginning - 9th September 2024

What an incredible first week back we have had! The children have come back in such high spirits and we couldn't be prouder of their efforts.

We have spent the majority of the week working on our artwork. The children have learned all about different painting techniques with the final goal of create a still life inspired by Paul Cezanne. I think you can all agree that the children's artwork is incredible and certainly have some budding artists in the making.

In PE, the children worked on their communication and tactics skills with Mr Smith. They were given a range of different games to play and had to work together to cause the opposition a problem and ultimately win the game.

In Science, we started our unit of work on forces and magnets. We carried out an investigation into how different surfaces impact how well a toy car moves. We found out that the smoother and less bumpy 'roads' had the least friction and made the car travel further.

An amazing week Year 4! Well done!
