Our Aims:

The principles of teaching Spanish as our Modern Foreign Language at Brighton Avenue Primary School are consistent with our school philosophy and take into account the National Curriculum Guidance for MFL. (See MFL Policy for further information).

Principles of Teaching Spanish (MFL):

• To develop our children’s experience of language and encourage curiosity about other languages which are spoken in school.
• To develop our children’s understanding of what they hear, read and ensure they have the ability to express themselves through verbal and written sessions.
• To extend our children's knowledge by understanding how the language works and exploring the differences between Spanish and English.
• To provide a weekly Spanish lesson of 30 minutes to ALL of our Key Stage 2 children.
• To re-visit and deepen their learning for 5-10 minutes every day with structured language tasks that practise retrieval, improve retention and embed learning in long-term memory. (Power of 3)
• To provide further opportunities to recycle key vocabulary (e.g. numbers)
• To develop children’s confidence by building into classroom routines including greetings, providing instructions, stating lunch preferences, registration, rewards and praise on a more regular basis, even just for a few minutes in the school day e.g. when children are lining up.
• To provide a detailed scheme of work with audio to enable resources for every lesson is provided in order to minimise unnecessary teacher workload.
