Year 1KT

Welcome to our page where you can find out about what we're learning and see pictures of some of our highlights.

In our class we are all unique and individual characters.

With support from Mrs Thomas and Mrs Farmer, we practise using our recipe for learning every day -

A cup of curiosity

1 tbsp of self-care skills

A scoop of confidence

1 tsp of listening

1 tsp of resilience

A cup of communication

An inkling of independence

Please keep popping back to our page to see how we apply this recipe independently.

There is also a section below where you can find links to excellent learning resources that you can use with your child at home.

Muddy monsters 12th October 2026

We've had a brilliant afternoon in our forest school area with Phil from Muddy Monsters, making mud cakes, painting, building, and working together as a team to secure hammocks - and having lots of fun swinging in them!

Pupils of the Week 9th October 2026

A huge well done to James and Hani this week!

James was chosen for being a year 1 superstar! All half term he has worked hard, shown good listening and had brilliant behaviour - I could go on! What a fantastic role model he is to have in class!

Hani was chosen for her brilliant work in Maths over the last couple of weeks. She has really been pushing herself and has been determined to succeed even when we've given her some really tricky challenges! What a brilliant attitude to her learning she has!

Keep it up Hani and James!

Harvest Festival 8th October 2026

We have worked so hard at learning the words to Big Blue Tractor for our Harvest Festival and loved seeing all of the grown ups who came to watch us perform! We did a brilliant job and Mrs Thomas and Mrs Farmer are so proud of us - we know you all are too!

Fortnight beginning 28th September 2026

Another brilliant couple of weeks in Y1KT! The children are familiar with our routines now and are working - and playing - hard every day!

The children really enjoyed our Macmillan Coffee morning, wearing non uniform and sharing biscuits and juice - we were really happy to be able to help raise money for such a worthy cause.

We have been lucky enough to have 2 visitors into school this fortnight. We spent time in our outdoor learning environment with Jess from Teaching Trees, who helped us to explore the parts of a tree and how to tell the difference between deciduous and ever green trees as part of our Science unit.

Eve from Alive Church also came and we thought about what makes us unique, in line with Religious Education unit on Christianity and what Christians believe. She talked to us about how she is a Christian and she believes that God made everyone unique and we explored what makes each of us in our class unique, including looking at how our fingerprints are different!

In Maths we have explored how to half objects and quantities and are now confident in this, and we have started to add numbers using bead strings and number lines.

In English we continue to look at different texts - using Rainbow Fish, and Gorilla over the last couple of weeks, to build on our skills of writing simple sentences and have even started to add describing words - adjectives - to our sentences!

Our first few weeks in Year 1 - up to 18th September 2026

What a busy start to Year 1 we've all had! The children have settled straight into our daily routines, have loved exploring their new environment and have blown us all away with their attitudes towards Year 1 learning - just wow!

So far we have completed a Woven Wonders unit in Art, where we learnt how to knot, plait, wrap and thread using a range of media (such as wool and pipe cleaners) to make 3D textile art inspired by the artists Cecilia Vicuña and Judith Scott.

Our Science unit this half term is "Plants" and we have been studying trees, learning the names of different trees in our local area, and the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees. We really enjoyed using our forest school area to extend our learning.

In Geography we are exploring our local area and have been looking at maps of Gateshead, the UK and places around the world where some of us were born!

In English our main focus has been oracy and sentence structure - we have used the stories Whatever Next by our author of the term Jill Murphy, and Ruby's Worry so far to retell using picture prompts, to answer simple retrieval questions, and to write simple sentences with capital letters in the correct places, finger spaces and full stops.

We have been practising counting forwards and backwards in Maths, as well as starting to recognise numbers as words, and exploring different amounts that make 10!

We have also started to learn about what Christians believe in RE, and in our PE sessions we have been exploring how to move in different ways using big and small body movements as part of our gymnastics sessions.

Well done for a fantastic start to year 1 life Y1KT!

Pupils of the week 18th September 2026

A huge well done to our first Pupils of the week this year - Amal and Alex! We are so proud of how they have both settled into Year 1! Alex is an absolute joy to be around, he has already become familiar with our routines, and his smile really lights up our day. Amal has such a fantastic attitude to her learning. She tries so hard with everything we ask her to do and is a real Brighton Avenue Star! Well done Amal and Alex!
