Welcome to our page where you can find out about what we're learning and see pictures of some of our highlights.
In our class we are all unique and individual characters.
With support from Mrs Thomas and Miss Farrage, we practise using our recipe for learning every day -
A cup of curiosity
1 tbsp of self-care skills
A scoop of confidence
1 tsp of listening
1 tsp of resilience
A cup of communication
An inkling of independence
Please keep popping back to our page to see how we apply this recipe independently each week.
There is also a section below where you can find links to excellent learning resources that you can use with your child at home.
Christmas party 16th December 2025
We all had a brilliant time at our KS1 Christmas party. It was lovely to see the children laughing and dancing with their friends, playing Musical Statues, Christmas Corners, and Pass the Parcel, and Santa even came to visit!
Fortnight beginning 24th November 2025
We've had a brilliant couple of weeks in Year 1KT! We had a Muddy Monsters session in forest school which was great fun - and came with extra mud! We shone when demonstrating our team work skills!
In Science we have explored our topic of 'Animals including humans' by looking at the features of different animals, how they can be classified, and we've started to investigate the different diets of different animals, using the terms 'herbivore' 'omnivore' and 'carnivore'
In RE we have looked at why Christians celebrate Christmas. As part of this we made a class chain with all of the things we are grateful for, and it was lovely to see so many of the children write that the thing they are most grateful for is their family.
We were also lucky enough to have Mel from NUSTEM visit us to carry out a Naval Architects workshop with us. She showed us the skills that a Naval Architect needs, and we explored the best way to make a boat float and carry a load. Thank you to our parents who came into the family session - it was brilliant to have you in school.
In DT we worked so hard at designing, making and evaluating a puppet based on the story "Little Red Riding Hood". We explored joining techniques such as stapling, glueing, and safety pins, chose our favourite to use to make our puppets, practised our cutting skills, and chose the materials we would need to decorate our puppets. Didn't we do an amazing job?!
We have also had a surprise visitor from the North Pole this week! Santa heard how amazing the children in Year 1 are and sent one of his elves to have some fun with us! Check out some of the things he's been up to so far!

Our trip to Safety Works 27th November 2025

- Road safety - how to cross a road safely as well as the risks around a road - ask your children about the 4 steps to road safety - "Stop, Look, Listen, Think"
- Fire safety - learning about the different fire risks around our home, and what to do if there is a fire (Call out, Get Out, Call the Fire Brigade Out)
- Railway/metro safety - the different risks around railway and metro lines, as well as how to stay safe.
- Open water safety - how to spot dangers around open water, what to do if we are in trouble in water, and how to help someone else in trouble.
- Wellbeing session where we learnt how to recognise different emotions and regulate our emotions through different breathing activities.
Thank you so much to our parent helpers for coming with us to help keep our children safe during the visit!
Fortnight beginning 10th November 2025
This fortnight we have been busy with lots of special events. We remembered soldiers by decorating poppies to make a beautiful window display, and learnt about the different coloured poppies and what they mean. We also raised money for Children In Need, and had biscuits and juice to celebrate, as well as wearing non-school uniform into school.
We have had a STEAM day, where our focus in Year 1 was on structures. We learnt about windmills and their features, and then designed and made our own windmills.
In Maths we have explored the properties of shapes, investigating how many sides and corners different shapes have, and we realised that whichever orientation a shape is in, those properties stay the same!
In English we have been working towards a character description of the troll from The Three Billy Goat's Gruff. The children were excellent at getting into character as the troll, scaring Mrs Thomas and Miss Farrage with their bellowing and roaring. We thought they were really going to eat us up!

In Religious Education this half term we will be looking into the Christian celebration of Christmas. We started the unit by learning about the story of the Nativity and had lots of fun acting out what Christians believe happened during the story.
We also had so much fun when Sab from the Royal Institution visited to carry out an "Explosive Foods" Science show!

Our trip to Gateshead Library
14th October 2025
We had a brilliant afternoon at Gateshead Library today. The librarian read us some really fun, interactive stories, and then we took part in a scavenger hunt where we had to work with a partner to find books that featured different themes such as sports, a princess, bugs, vehicles and food. After that we chose a book to bring back to school, and even checked them out ourselves!
A big thank you to our parent volunteers Naomi, Tom, Miheala, and Dayna who took the time to come with us. We really appreciate it!
Fortnight beginning 29th September 2025
We have been busy in Maths learning how to identify half of a shape, object, and number, and then moving to addition using part-whole models, and exploring how number lines work!
In English we have used The Rainbow Fish as a basis to investigate and identify exclamation marks and question marks - we can now start to use these in our writing!
In Science we had fun looking at the different parts of plants that we can eat and how to tell which part of a plant different vegetables come from.
In RE we finished our 'Christianity Creation' unit by looking at some key artefacts that Christians use to help them in their faith, such as the cross, bibles, and Advent candles.
Pupil of the Week 10th October 2025
A huge well done to Danny and Ellis this week. Danny was chosen for having such a brilliant attitude to his learning, always being willing and keen to work hard. He is also one of the kindest little boys we have ever had in Year 1, always looking out for his friends and talking about his family.
Ellis was chosen for being a Year 1 Star! He is the perfect role model, not just for his friends in Year 1, but for everyone in the whole school. He is an absolute dream to have in class.
Fortnight beginning 15th September 2025
We have been full of busy over the last couple of weeks. In English we have looked at a range of Recommended Reads, using these to write simple sentences using capital letters and full stops. In Maths we have started counting in multiples of 10s and have been doing great!
In Science we have explored the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees...ask us about this at home! In Geography we are looking at the UK and searched for the UK on a map, as well as the countries that our families are originally from!
We've also enjoyed European Languages Day, where Miss Chelmowska read us a story in Polish, and we were lucky enough to have Mathilde visit our class to read to us in French!

We did a great job at observing the different types of trees in our school to start our 'Plants' unit in Science. Well done Year 1KT! In PE we have used different body parts to move around - focusing on our 'big' body parts, as part of our Gymnastics unit 'Body Parts'
