Year 2 CB

Welcome to Year 2B class page.

We have the recipe for success!

Take a group of enthusiastic children and add together caring and supportive teachers (don’t

forget to add teaching assistants!). Pour in lots of challenging and fun activities and sprinkle with excellent manners and behaviour. Stir until learning and progress is outstanding! Voila…a fantastic Year 2!

Join us on our fabulous learning journey as we use our skills to learn about our world in the past, present and future so that we can become valuable citizens of modern Britain.

We've had a busy few weeks in school. We started the week with inviting the parents in to our stay and play session where they were able to join in with us making Christmas cards and calendars. We loved having all the parents/carers in school and we can't wait to do it all again! In Computing, we have been looking at algorithms and we played a game where we used AI to try and work out what we were drawing. We had so much fun. Then, we had to build a small structure using lego and describe to our partners how to make this ... some of us did this perfectly and some needed a little tweaking.

In DT, the children have been looking at creating different structures to make baby bear's chair. First, the children had to test different shapes to see which was the strongest and then plan and design their structure. In groups, they then made baby bear's chair which we are pleased to say that ALL the chiairs were able to support the weight of baby bear and didn't collapse.

A HUGE well done to Daiva and Mard who were our stars of the week. Daiva has been trying really hard with her behaviour and has made big improvements. Mard thought carefully about how to design and make a chair for baby bear. Well done you are both superstars!

Maths: Last week we grew in confidence with our multiplication and division skills and proved that we are great with our 5, 10 and 2 times table and division facts. This week in maths, we have been learning about 2D shapes and their properties. We sorted shapes based on their properties, identified vertical lines of symmetry in shapes and drew shapes using grid paper.

PE: In PE, we have been continuing to master our ball skills and coordination. We have practiced moving whilst dribbling the ball with our hands and passing using a chest pass. We applied our skills in a mini game of basketball, which we loved. It was so much fun!

This Friday, has been Design Technology STEAM day. We learnt how axles help wheels move a vehicle and then designed and labelled a working Ferris wheel. We worked in small groups to make the Ferris wheel with s stable structure using a range of materials. of course, we wanted to make it into a competition so stay tuned for the winners...

Our two stars of the week are Elio and Layla Q. Layla has grown so much in confidence and maturity since the start of the year and she ALWAYS gives 100% effort in everything she does. She is the perfect role model in class and we are so proud of you. Elio has blown my socks off with his multiplication skills ... he is such a multiplication whizz! I can tell he spends a lot of time practising them at home ... you are a super star!

This week, we have started our new unit in science. We have been investigating different materials and looking at their properties. The children had to sort the different materials into the groups describing their properties. The children had so much fun. In Geography, the children had to use atlases to locate the continents and oceans of the world. They were really good and were even able to locate where we live on a UK map.

Well done to our two stars of the week ... Blake and Daisy. Blake has worked really hard in reading and is making good progress and Daisy is always a perfect role model in class who gives 100% effort in everything you do.

Week commencing 6th October

It's been another busy week in Year 2. We had our first visit to Gateshead Library this week and the children go to take part in a scavenger hunt where they had to find different objects in books. The children loved this and found all the objects! After, the children then listened to a story and we even saw a scarecrow that one of the children had made during a family session at the library. The children were very excited to choose their first book to bring back to school to read for pleasure.

Our two stars of this week are Bluebell and Jayden G. Bluebell is an all round gorgeous girl who ALWAYS behaves impeccably and gives 100% effort in everything she does. Jayden was absolutely amazing in maths when solving problems linked to fractions. He listened really carefully to the input and was able to apply this to his work. You are both super stars! Well done!

We've had a super busy week! We began the week with our first muddy monsters session where the children got to make dens, explore the mud kitchen and look for insects. The children all had a great time and the weather was amazing!

We also went on our trip to the Baltic and the Quayside to learn about the Great Fire of Gateshead. The children started the day looking out of the viewing platform and describing what they could see. We discussed the different bridges we could see and what they were called. Then, the children drew their favourite bridge before designing and making their own. In the afternoon, we went on a walk around the Quayside to find out where the fire started and then we saw the ruins of the houses before we shouted 'Fire, Fire' to see how many people noticed. We had a great day!

Our two stars of the week are Sylvester and Layla R. Sylvester has blown me away with maths skills this week and has moved on to lots of reasoning challenges. Layla R is always the PERFECT role model in class and gives 100% effort in everything she does! What super stars you are!

Week commencing 8th September

We've had another busy week in Y2B. The children have been learning about basic first aid skills and what we should have in a first aid box. We discussed what we would do if we needed first aid and how we could help each other. In R.E, the children learnt that a parable is a comparison of two things, often done through a story that has two meanings.  The children then had a great time acting out a freeze frame from the parable.

A HUGE well done to to our two children who received the first pupil of the week. Theo has been amazing in art and created a great collage of the Angel of the North using different textured paper that he created. Sophie is just an exceptional role model in class ALL the time. She always gives 100% effort in everything she does ... we are so proud of you both. Super stars!

We've had such a busy first week back at school after the summer holidays. Your children have all settled in beautifully to life in Year 2. It is a HUGE step up from Year 1 and are expectations are high but the children are rising to this challenge. We have got very messy this week during our art unit. We have learnt about an artist called Romare Bearden and looked at lots of different collages that he has created. We created our own collage of 'The Angel of the North' which I have to say look incredible. We started the week learning how to colour mix before we then printed with different textures. We then pieced it all together to create our collage. We had lots of fun!

We have also elected our school councillors who are Niki and Theo are they both gave a fantastic speech as to how they could help improve our school. We also chose our Reading Champions who are Blake and Daisy who are so excited to promote reading within our class and the school. A HUGE well done to you all!
