This year, Year 3W will be immersed in a whirlwind of challenges and creative ventures, designed to ignite their imaginations and push the boundaries of their learning. Collaboration will be at the heart of our learning as we navigate through a maze of exploration and thinking.
We encourage our children to show resilience and we shall nurture a classroom where every individual is cherished, and each contribution is celebrated. Let's make this year in Year 3 unforgettable!

This week the school celebrated being awarded School of Sanctuary. The children enjoyed watching a great performance from our children. The rest of the day was spent decorating biscuits, face painting and also singing along to traditional songs from the North East.
Great work from Dara and Franklin this fortnight.
Franklin has been working independently in both his maths and his English and producing great work.
Dara is a fantastic role model in our class who always gives 100% and is always polite.

Local artist, Paul Raymond, came into school to teach the children about sculptures. He told the children how artists can get their inspiration from the world around them and then use it to make abstract sculptures. The children had great fun using different joining techniques to make their own abstract art. On Wednesday, the children went on a treasure hunt around Saltwell Park to find out more about the park's history. They learnt lots of facts about The Dene and also Saltwell Towers.
This week Eve from Alive Church came to talk to the children about the reason Christians called the day Jesus died Good Friday. The children asked lots of interesting questions. In Art, the children were learning how to join materials using different types of joins. They then found out about Anthony Caro and what he used for inspiration.
As part of their PE, the children were lucky to have a cricket coach come into school. The children were taught how to bat and field. They then applied it into game where they had to strike the ball and score runs. All the children had a great time. In English, the children have been learning how to use inverted commas. They acted out some events in the story and then added dialogue in the form of speech bubbles. This was really useful when they came to do their writing the next day.
Vinos has been amazing this week in maths. She really tried her best when working with fractions.
Mohamad has been writing sentences independently in his English work. He has been editing his work to ensure he has included all of his works.
In English, the children learnt how to look up words in the dictionary. It was tricky at first but by the end of the lesson the children were quick at finding the words. This week was Career's Week. The children discussed what they liked to do and also what skills they were good at. They then looked at the careers that they could do. At the end of the week it was World Book Day. The children came dressed in their pyjamas and did lots of activities around books, including designing their own book cover.
The start of the week saw the children brave the cold conditions to take part in Muddy Monsters. They were taught how to tie knots and then used this skill to make tripods with sticks. In DT, the children got to design and construct their pneumatic toy. They had great fun making them and also playing with them. On Thursday, Durham University brought some prehistoric artefacts to enhance the learning of the children. They were able to use them to guess who they might have belong to.
The children started this week by measuring different parts of their body using different equipment. They had to ensure that they used the correct unit when measuring. In Art, the children started looking at the work of Anthony Caro. They use card to build a sculpture without using glue or tape. They learnt that they could join parts together by using a variety of joining techniques.
This week has been Children's Mental Health. The Children's Champion did a presentation during assembly. They focused on all the emotions that children can experience and how we can take care of our mental health. During the week, the children had the opportunity to share experiences of when they felt proud of something they did and also what to do if they find something challenging. It was also Number Day at the end of the week and the children had great fun playing a game which helped them learn their tables.
Alara has been focusing on her and produce a great introduction to her instructions that hooked the reader.
Gabi was fantastic at interpreting a bar charts and answer a wide range of questions.

This week the parents were invited in to take part in an Internet lesson on E-safety. The children discussed with each other and their parents, what they should do if they see something that upsets them. To get the message across to other children, they then designed a poster. In Science, the children have been learning about the skeleton. They were given some x-rays and they had to decide which area of the body the x-ray was. In Dt, the children have started to investigate pneumatic systems and had great fun using air to move things.
The children have continued to read Planet Omar in their Reading sessions. This week they had to use the text to come to a judgement to whether they would help a nasty character in need. In English, the children are using the book 'My Strong Mind' to write instructions. They tried to make a paper boat by following instructions which was a little tricky to do. They learnt that you should never give up when faced with a challenging task. On Friday, the children had to locate the data on food and drink to find out how much sugar there was. The children were all shocked to see the amount of sugar that was in food and drink that they didn't think would have sugar.
Mohamad has been working hard to write his sentences independently. He is starting to sound out his words and include punctuation.
Malcolm has had a great start to the term and has returned to school with a great attitude towards his work.

This week the children had a special visitor from NUSTEM. Jo came to talk to the class about being a sports scientist and all the different jobs they do. They were able to use equipment to measure the strength of their grip, their pulse rate and also how high they could jump.
In Music this term, the children are learning about salsa music. They had a great time learning how to dance and singing the words to the song.
Happy New Year! The children have started the year with great enthusiasm. They have written some great strories which have included prepositions as starters and also included extended noun phrases. In Maths, they have been placing numbers on a number line and also rounding numbers to the nearest ten and hundred.
A great start to the new year for all!
Riley amazed all the staff at the Great North Museum with his knowledge of the Stone Age and rocks.
Hollie completed an excellent piece of writing by including lots of adventurous words.

This week the children have been focusing on their DT unit. They researched different types of fastenings before designing their own book covers. On Thursday it was Play and Stay and parents came into school to help the children sew their book covers. It was a bit tricky but all the children managed to finish their book covers with support from all the adults. Friday was Movie time and the children enjoyed a Christmas movie with cookies and hot chocolate.
Vinos has been a great help in the classroom, as she has been using her home language to translate for another pupil.
Isaac used lots of adjectives to describe the food on the menu at the Iron's Man Cafe.
Both children have been amazing!
This week the children went on a trip to the Great North Museum. They had great fun exploring the Prehistory part of the museum and were able to locate lots of interesting artefacts. The children also extended their learning of rocks by becoming geologists. They had to examine the rocks and identify them and then group them. The children had a great day!
This week the children went out into the Forest School well wrapped up! Their task was to use a variety of tools to cut and saw tree branches. They were also challenge to make something creative and children were making swings and dens. The cold weather didn't stop the children going out to practise their hockey skills either. They are now able to pass, receive and dribble the hockey ball and are now starting to apply this into a small sided game.
Angus was amazing at using grid references when locating countries from around the world. Indie has started to use great sentence starters in her writing. Congratulations to both superstars!
On Monday the children were lucky to meet the author Adeola Sokunbi. She talked to the children on how she became a writer and illustrator and how she gets her ideas. On Tuesday, the children went to Gateshead Central Library. They completed a book treasure hunt before choosing a book to take back to school. Friday was STEAM/DT day. This involved the children constructing an electrical circuit and inserting it into a poster to show local people where their EV charging units are in Gateshead.
Artin has made amazing progress in his maths. He is now able to use formal methods to add and subtract and is starting to use these methods to solve word problems. Elsa has been using fantastic vocabulary in her writing this week. The words she has chosen is really bringing her story to life. Well done!
The children started their week by paying our respects by holding a two minute silence. They decorated the classroom window by colouring poppies. In Geography, the children have been using maps to locate the USA and Florida. They then looked at a survey and used the data to come up with reasons why some tourist came from some countries and not others. The end of the week saw the children raise money for Children in Need.
Franklin was amazing when describing how fossils were made. He was able to describe the correct order and use scientific vocabulary.
Estell was able to use formal methods to add and subtract. She was also able to find the missing numbers in the strategy!

This week the children have started to learn written formal methods to add and subtract. They all found it tricky at the start of the week but as the week went on they all grew in confidence and are able to use the method. In English, they are using the book 'The Secret of Black Rock' as inspiration for their writing. They have worked in pairs to think of what it would be like to fall into the ocean and have recorded it on a planning sheet. This week has also been Green Careers Week and the children were able to find out what a biogeochemist does. Some of the children are considering this as a possible career for when they get older!
In the final week of term, the children have been finding out about prehistoric art. They looked at the cave drawings that were made during the Stone Age and then used this as an inspiration to draw their own animals. They explored the forest school area to make natural paints and colours. To make the art more prehistoric, the children created their own cave wall by using sand and glue. They then use charcoal and paints to make their very own prehistoric art work.
Great work from these two! Izzy has been showing great enthusiasm in all subjects. Jack has been showing great resilence when learning about fractions in Maths. Well done to both children!
The children have been celebrating Harvest by singing a song called Vegetables and Fruit. They were able to sing it in front of parents but here is a video for those parents who couldn't attend. Enjoy!
Jaden has grown in confidence since he started Year 3. We have been impressed how he is now starting to talk to adults and ask for help when needed. Kexin was amazing presenting her news report. Well done to both children.
This week the children have learning how websites work. They use cards to demonstrate how servers direct a web page to acomputer. In PE, the children have continued to perform symmetrical and asymmetrical balances but are now able to perform these on the apparatus. As part of World Mental Health Day, the children discovered that exercise can improve your mental health and tried to complete several dance moves with a bean bag on their head!
A great week for these two! Julia has been using amazing sentence starters and adventurous words in her writing. Valentino has also been a great writer and has included lots of expanded noun phrases and adventurous words to bring his story to life. Well done to both of these superstars!
This week the children have been journalists reporting on various news events. They interviewed eye witnesses and experts and then presented their news report. It was great to see them grow in confidence over the week.
Our school's Children's Champions were announced on Tuesday and we are pleased to announce that two are in our class - Jessica and Francis. They will aim to ensure that everyone is feeling safe in our school.
Ergi is Pupil of the Week as he was able to use lots of adjectives and adventurous words in his writing. Dara has also had an amazing week as he has been contributing to class discussion and producing outstanding work in all of his subjects.
Well done to both these amazing children.
This week the children have been learning how to keep the beat using the song Tongo. This is a call and response song and the children were split into two groups to sing it. Watch the video to see how amazing there were!
What an amazing start for these two! Michael has been contributing to class discussions and loves sharing his ideas. Jessica has also had a great start to Year 3 and always puts in 100% effort into her work. Super well done to both children!
This week the children started their ukulele lessons with Mr Parkin. They were taught to position their fingers on the frets to play two chords. They then strummed to the beat together. It was also National First Aid week and the children learnt what they need to do if their came across a casualty. They were able to identify possible hazards before having a group discussion on what they would do in a scenario.
Well done to Bella and Aylor who are our first Pupils of the Week. Bella has able to look at the work of Georgia O'Keeffe and then use this as inspiration to draw her own artwork, applying colour and tone. Aylor has had a great start to Year 3 and is keen to take on board advice and apply it into her work.
The children have had an amazing start to Year 3W. They have been exploring the artwork of Georgia O'Keeffe and learning how to add tone to their pictures using a variety of different medias. This week the children have started new subjects! Mr Parkin came in and taught them their first ukulele lesson and the children have also started their Spanish lessons. In Science they had the opportunity to look at a variety of rocks, including flint, which was used in the Stone Age.
