Pupil of the Week - 14.11.25
A HUGE well done to Billie and Krishiv who are this week's Pupils of the Week. Both children have had an amazing attitude towards their learning. Billie always knocks our socks off with her presentation and commitment to being the best she can be. Krishiv is always looking to improve, particularly in maths and we couldn't be prouder of both children! Well done!
Week Beginning 10th November 2025
Another hectic week in Year 4B this week. The children have continued their learning in English by exploring how to create tension with short sentences and have discovered the Place Between in our narrative work using Leon and the Place Between. In Maths, we have consolidated our learning in addition and subtraction by using the skills when solving problems and puzzles.
In PE, Mr Smith has been working on the children's tennis skills, exploring how to create space and focusing on the children's forehand technique. We had a particularly messy lesson in Science this week when we had a go at recreating the digestive system using a series of plastic bags, squished foods and a pair of tights! The children certainly made a lot of noise when we got to the end of the journey!!!!
In Reading, we have been exploring the world of Alice in Wonderland. We have read the first 3 chapters and learned about how Alice feels as she ventures into this weird and unbelievable world. We took part in some drama activities where the children took on the roles of Alice and the Catepilar as well.
Week Beginning 3rd November 2025
What a busy first week back we have in Year 4B. We have started our new units of work in all of our subjects and the children have really impressed us with their attitudes towards their learning. In English, we have started learning about stories with magical journeys to mysterious worlds. Leon and the Place Between and Alice in Wonderland are our books for Writing and Reading whilst our class reader is James and the Giant Peach. I can't wait to find out what happens in these amazing texts!
In Computing, the children have begun building on the coding skills they learned in Year 3 using Scratch on the laptops. We played a game which contained 'variables' to help track the score which we will then learn how to apply to our own games in the upcoming weeks. In PE, the children are learning how to play tennis; trying to score points against their opponents and causing them a problem.
Finally, on Friday, we were visited by Lydia who spoke to us all about Green Careers. We learned about all of the amazing work she has done over the years to support our planet, wildlife and communities to make the Earth a much better place for us all to live. She was amazing and we can't thank her enough for her time.
Pupil of the Week - 24.10.25
Well done to Charlotte and Huzifa who are our final Pupils of the Week for the Autumn 1 term. Charlotte's incredible thirst to be the best she can be has really impressed us this half term. She always goes the extra mile in everything she does and we couldn't be prouder of the progress she has made since September. Huzifa's incredible independence when he comes into class is brilliant. He is always wanting to do more and more and this attitude is going to take him so far in life! Well done to you both!
Week Beginning - 20.10.25 - Liz Million Workshop
This morning, we were lucky enough to be chosen to attend the launch event of Gateshead Library's 100th birthday! It was hosted by author and illustrator Liz Million who treated us to an artist masterclass. The children learned how to create amazing portraits, using the eyes, mouth and clothes to tell us more about the character we are portraying. Liz was incredibly funny and we can't thank her enough for fantastic energy and enthusiasm for reading and drawing. The children all created masterpieces which they could take home at the end of the day. What a morning!
Week Beginning - 13.10.25 - Cooplands Bakery!
We have had a fantastic week filled with visits and plenty of sweet treats. The highlight of the week, if not the year so far, was our visit to Cooplands Bakery in Durham. We had an opportunity to look around their factory, watching donuts being made and bread rolls proving before being baked. We even got to see millionaires shortbread being decorated! It was incredible seeing all the staff working with the machines to create what we see in their shops. Back in their training room, we talked about how Cooplands decide what to bake for certain times of the year and how they adapt their recipes to suit different events or festivals. This leads into what the children will be learning about in DT after half term (creating vegan Christmas/Winter themed biscuits).
Hindu Temple Visit - Tuesday 7th October 2025
What an amazing visit we had to the ISKCON Newcastle Hindu Temple on Tuesday morning. Kirtida shared so much information about life as a Hindu, what she believes and how it impacts upon her daily life. The children were so impressive when they were able to share the knowledge that they have learned since the start of Year 4. We then had the opportunity to explore the temple, try on some traditional Hindu clothing and take part in a mini drumming workshop. A huge thank you to Kirtida for welcoming us and well done to all the children!
Pupil of the Week - 3rd October 2025
Congratulations to Murad and Himika who are this week's Pupils of the Week. Both children have really impressed us with their hard work, especially times tables and we couldn't ask for more perfect role models in our school!
Weeks Beginning 29th September 2025
Another busy week in the land of Year 4B. We have been exploring non-chronological reports in English all about the Romans. We spent time on Wednesday researching facts about the Romans that we could include in our reports. Any extra work the children can be doing at home to gain extra knowledge and life as a Roman would be amazing! In maths, we have started learning about fractions, namely tenths and hundredths before converting them to their decimal equivalents.
Science saw us revise our understanding of classification diagrams which we can use sort living things, including types of plants based on their leaves. We continued our Spanish work by learning how to say our own birthdays and ask someone else when their birthday is. Mr Smith taught the children some more valuable communication and tactic skills in PE and also worked with the class learning how to play 'This Little Light of Mine' on their glockenspiels and singing 'Scat' as a whole class. We have also been learning to play a sequence of notes as a class on the ukuleles with Mr Parkin. It certainly has been a musical week!
Next week, we have our first visit of the year. We will be exploring the Hindu Temple in Newcastle to learn more about life as a Hindu and what customs and traditions take place within the Temple.
Weeks Beginning 22nd September 2025
This week, the children have continued their learning all about historical narratives. We have joined 'Charlie and Tilda' as they have found the magic portal back in time to ancient York. We have learned how to use fronted adverbials as well as inverted commas to engage the reader. We have also created some amazing freeze frames to show how the characters are feeling during the story.
In maths, we have begun to learn about number sequences and explaining if certain numbers will appear in a particular sequence. RE saw us explore the world of Karma and how Hindus believe in their Atman being their souls. The children learned more about this using a game of snakes and ladders; trying our best to get to Moksha (square 100).
In PE, we continued our topics of 'netball' and 'communication and tactics'. Mr Smith supported the children in their understanding of accurate throwing and catching as well as supporting our teammates using effective communication skills.
Pupil of the Week - 19th September 2025
Congratulations to Elliott and Ellie who are this week's Pupils of the Week. We have been very impressed with the way both children have settled into life at Brighton Avenue and we can't wait to see how much amazing progress they are going to make this year!
Weeks Beginning 15th September 2025 - Muddy Monsters
The children had an amazing time with Phil for their first Muddy Monsters session of the year. They were able to work in teams to create dens as well as explore our wonderful Forest School area. Take a look at the photos below from our morning.
Weeks Beginning 1st and 8th September 2025
Wow! What a busy first couple of weeks we have had in Year 4B! The children have come back in such amazing spirits and we can't wait to start our journeys together in Year 4. Here are just a few highlights of what we have been up to since we came back.
We started with Art in which we completed our unit of work all about 'Tints and Shades'. We looked at the work of famous artists including Paul Cezanne and Clara Peeters. We discussed how they use light and dark to create 3d images in their still-life paintings. We then created our own still-life paintings using the techniques taught to use to create life like paintings.
In English, we have started to write stories set in Ancient Rome. The children have learned how to describe settings using similes and other forms of imagery to create an atmosphere of tension and suspense. We have also started reading History Hackers all about Charlie and Tilda who explore time travel and discover many hidden treasures on their way.
In Maths, we have begun with the basics of number and place value. The children have learned how to compare and order numbers, up to 4-digits, before practising rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000. This certainly proved challenging for many of the class so we would be encouraging them to keep practising whenever they can!
In Science, we have started learning about living things and their habitats. The children learned how to classify vertebrates and how we can identify whether they are mammals, fish, reptiles, birds or amphibians based on their physical characteristics. In History, we have completed 2 lessons of our Romans topic where we have discussed why The Romans wanted to invade Britain as well as how they were almost defeated by the mighty Boudica and her armies.
PE saw us begin our unit on communication and tactics. We played whole class games of noughts and crosses before working as a team to try and beat our opponents. We learned that the same tactic won't always work against certain teams so we need to be willing to adapt if we want to succeed.
Make sure you keep coming back to this page to see more photos and information about what we have been doing in Year 4B!
