Year 4SL

Welcome to 4L!

Welcome to fantastic, fun, fabulous 4L!  In our class we relish a challenge and enjoy learning in all different types of ways.  We always strive to achieve success for all because we know that every child is a star.  We show this by bringing a positive attitude to our learning every day and by supporting and encouraging each other.

We know that we are all different and that our differences make us special.  We value each other and demonstrate that in everything we do.

Below you will find lots of useful information about what we will learn, as well as weekly updates sharing highlights of what we have done as a class, so please visit this page regularly for the latest news!

Pupil of the Week 14th November 2025

Congratulations to Angus and Julia, our two pupils of the week.

They have both impressed staff lately and thoroughly deserve this award.

Angus has been contributing lots in lessons and is always ready with thoughtful ideas and questions, showing that he is fully engaged in his learning.  Great job Angus!

Julia always strives for the best possible outcome and this shows itself in all of her English and Maths work.  She is a pleasure to teach, always displaying lovely manners.  She even recently represented the school at a local Maths challenge day.  Great job Julia!

Week Beginning 3rd November 2025

Once again, our class has had a fantastic, varied and engaging week after a much needed half term break.

We have learned about the importance of Remembrance, with the upcoming 11th November next week in mind.  The class has decorated the window with a lovely display of poppies.

In our new Music topic, we have used the work of Henry Mancini's Pink Panther Theme as an inspiration to think about different qualities of sound (timbre) as well as exploring composition and improvising in small groups.

Thinking ahead to later in the year, the class began their preparations for our class's contribution to the dance festival (see photo!)

All of KS2 had a fantastic time when a visitor from the Royal Institute came to talk to us.  The most exciting moment was certainly when she demonstrated the fact that we measure calories by heating water with food by setting some flour on fire!  The children learned so much!

We also enjoyed another visitor coming to see us on Friday: Lydia Cave from Groundwork NE and Cumbria to work with the children on 'green' careers.  The children learned a lot about the wide range of careers that exist within this field, and had lots of fun learning about recycling with an enjoyable bean bag game, as well as creating our own upcycled bunting as a way to show what we had learned in the session.

Week Beginning 20th October 2025

It's been a varied and exciting final week of the first half term of the year.

The class have continued to make great progress in their ukulele playing in their Music sessions with Mr Parkin.

In Computing, everyone now has a better understanding of how to create online surveys and to use Excel to interpret the results.

On Monday, we had a fantastic opportunity to make a visit to Gateshead Library - which we always enjoy - choosing new books.  However, this time was even more special, as we had a great session working the children's illustrator, Liz Million.  She shared her ideas and techniques with the class, who really enjoyed creating their own characters!

On Wednesday, we also had an exciting visit to the Cooplands Bakery site in Durham.  The children enjoyed exploring how the different products are made and even got to try their hand at decorating their gingerbread people!  This will be helpful for our DT learning next half term and the trip also got the class thinking more about the real world of work and considering ideas for their own careers in the future.

Pupil of the Week 24th October 2025

Congratulations to this week's two superstars: Aylor and Kexin!

Both girls truly deserve this award.  Aylor is such a lovely, well-mannered, hard-working member of the class and is so friendly to everyone!  She is a delight to have in the class.

Kexin is also a super hard-working, thoughtful girl who always tries her best and is a brilliant role model to all.  Another absolute pleasure to teach!

Well done both!

Week Beginning 13th October 2025

In Music this week, the class have worked hard to use their own ideas based on the pentatonic scale to improvise and create their arrangement on the famous gospel song, "This Little Light of Mine".  What they achieved in just a short amount of time was amazing!

In this week's PE time, the class have done a fantastic job of putting their passing and defending skills together in a series of activities and games.  Their netball skills are definitely improving!

On Thursday, along with all of KS2, we had the exciting opportunity to watch some of our talented musicians, including two from our class, and talented dancers perform at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music.  This was part of a project that the school has been involved with this half term, set up by the singer Corinne Bailey-Rae.  Watching our school's pupil perform with professional musicians was a true delight and very inspiring!  It was a fantastic occasion and the class were in awe of the performance and the venue!

In Maths this week, the class have been continuing their work on fractions.  On Friday, they put their knowledge into practice by creating and playing an equivalent fractions matching pairs game.  It was a lot of fun!

Finally, Friday was the big day - our Harvest Festival.  The class did a wonderful job in their two performances of 'Easy Peasy Harvest'.  Well done everyone!!

Week Beginning 6th October 2025

We have had a great week in Year 4L!

One of the highlights of the week was most definitely our visit to the Hindu Temple.  The class behaved impeccably, with lots of great listening and excellent questions.  They learned so much from the visit and enjoyed the opportunity to find out about an important world religion from someone who practises the faith.

In PE this week, the class began a new topic: Netball.  They learned lots about defence and attack by playing some small sided games based on retaining possession.  And they had a lot of fun too!

In Maths this week, the class continued their fractions topic, moving on to finding equivalent fractions.  For the final lesson of the week, the class enjoyed making and playing a game to demonstrate their recall of the times table they are currently focused on - matching pairs game!

Please enjoy the photos below.

Pupils of the Week so far

Congratulations to our four pupils of the week so far this year:  Maili, Riley, Isaac and Astera.

The have all stood out in their own ways since coming into Year 4.  Riley is a very hard-working, conscientious boy with a real thirst for learning.  He should be very proud of how he has begun the year!  Maili has been a wonderful role model of kindness and helpfulness within the class, and again, is someone with boundless enthusiasm and interest in their learning.  Isaac is a young man with impeccable manners and has impressed me with his focused, calm attitude to learning.  What a star!  Astera has had such a great start to the year.  She always asks great questions and tasks her independent learning seriously - a great sign as she makes the transition into Year 4.

Well done to all of them!

Week Beginning 3rd October 2025

What a lovely week we've had in Year 4L!

In Maths this week, we have begun our Fractions unit, focusing on tenths and hundredths, including counting up and back and finding decimal equivalents.  To end the week, the children made some very clever 'loop cards' / dominos to show they understood the different ways to represent the same fraction.  (See the photos.)

In English, the class have worked on researching information about Roman Britain and have begun to transform their notes into non-chronological reports.  One fact in particular which seems to have fascinated the class is that people didn't have their own toilets but needed to use the town's communal ones - which didn't even have partitions!

Our PE lessons lately have focused on game strategies, tactics and teamwork.  This week this included some travelling and catching games (see photos!)
