w.c. 10.11.25 - Safety Works Trip
On Tuesday, we visited the Safety Works centre in Benwell. We participated in lots of workshops ran by Northumbria Police, Nexus, RNLI, Tyne and Wear Fire Service and Gateshead Council. Each workshop focused on teaching us a range of important life skills, ensuring we know how to keep ourselves safe as our independence grows. We tackled topics such as peer pressure and learnt about the consequences of our actions. We all left confident that we know how to keep ourselves safe in a range of scenarios.

Wow! What a fantastic week back following the October half term. This week, we have started learning about fractions. I have been blown away by the children's resilience and can-do attitude when tackling some tricky concepts - wonderful!
In English, we have been focusing on descriptive writing using figurative language to build and develop an atmosphere. We watched the video '23 degrees, 5 minutes' which showed us a solitary figure battling the treacherous conditions of The Arctic in order to search for his missing professor. The language the children used in these descriptions was amazing - really made me feel like I was wandering The Arctic myself!
In Science, we became electricians and investigated circuits. We experimented with different components and combinations within our circuits, using our problem solving and reasoning skills to fix faulty circuits.
Well done 6S - a wonderful first week back!
w.c. 13.10.25 - Leaver's Hoodies!
What an amazing surprise we had this week, when our Leaver's hoodies arrived early on Monday! The staff couldn't wait to get them handed out to the children, especially as this year we went with a new design. The children look amazing and SO smart in their hoodies!
w.c. 8.10.25 & 13.10.25
We've had a busy few weeks in 6S. We concluded our Spanish unit by bringing our outfit designs to life. We needed to use our design criteria to think about the purpose of each outfit and the reasons behind wearing different items of clothing. We used our speaking and listening skills to prepare presentations explaining the reasons why we had selected our clothing. Don't our outfit models look great?!
In Science, we have continued learning about the circulatory system. This week, we took a deep dive into the different components of blood and their functions. We did this by making our own blood! It was very yucky but helped us to remember the function of each component.
In PE, we have continued developing our Netball skills by progressing into game situations. We introduced positions with designated areas of the playing court. The children have played with such enthusiasm and teamwork - I have been so impressed. Well done 6S!
29.9.25 - Gateshead Library Visit
On Monday morning, we visited Gateshead Library for the first time this year. When we arrived, we were treated to a few Halloween poems as spooky season is nearly upon us! The children were set the task of a treasure hunt in the junior library which included challenges such as finding a book with the most unique shape and finding a book published in the year they were born. The children did fantastically and explored the books as they searched. We were then given some time to pick out a book for ourselves that we would like to read for pleasure. There were lots of Halloween themed books chosen!!
The Gateshead Library staff were really complimentary about the children's behaviour and knowledge of books - well done 6S! Superstars!
Friday 26th September - European Day of Languages
To celebrate European Day of Languages, we were in for a treat! Leo very kindly brought in a storybook from home which was written in Greek. We settled down with some juice and biscuits to listen to Leo read us the story. He even went the extra mile and photocopied the pages of the book so that we could all see the pictures. I was absolutely blown away by Leo's confidence when reading out loud to the class and he was so knowledgeable when he stopped after each page and expertly translated to us all. Leo - you are amazing!!
w.c. 8.9.25 & 15.9.25
Wow. Wow. WOW! I have been blown away by the children over the last few weeks: they have settled in life in Y6 beautifully. I am SO proud of them! The children are already showing they are ready to be fantastic Y6 role models this year.
In English, we have been exploring setting descriptions and characterisation linked with the book 'Rainplayer'. We looked at how we could develop a mood and atmosphere in our writing through use of figurative language. We then looked at how we can develop characterisation during a dialogue between two characters. We used role play to think about what actions our characters would do to show they were feeling scared and angry.
In Maths, we have been exploring numbers up to 10,000,000 as well as tackling the tricky concepts of rounding numbers to 1,000,000 and calculating with negative numbers. They children have impressed me so much with their enthusiasm and resilience in Maths - well done!
In History, we began exploring Ancient Maya. We used atlases to discover where the Maya people lived before learning about what jobs they would have had as well as thinking about special buildings and their purposes. Did you know the Maya people used to give sacrifices to the gods?
In Science, we have began to explore the Circulatory system. We all became blood cells and acted out the process of the blood delivering oxygen, nutrients and water to the muscles while carrying waste products back to the lungs.
In PE, we began our unit of Netball. The children built on their skills from Y5 and practised offensive tactics while recapping the rules of Netball.
What an amazing, but busy, first few weeks. Well done 6S!!!
w.c. 02.09.25
Wow! What a first week back we have had! The children have settled in fantastically to life in Year 6 - already acting as role models to those around them. This week, we have enjoyed completing out art unit focusing on using drawing skills to make our voice heard. We explored how we can use symbols and colours in our artwork to portray messages. We thought about what we are passionate about and created some AMAZING pieces. Check them out below!
