Year 6R

Welcome to 6R!
Ready to learn, laugh and shine together!

Welcome to our amazing classroom - where every day is a chance to discover something new, challenge ourselves and support each other. In 6R, we believe in working hard, dreaming big and being kind. This is our final year of primary school, and we’re going to make it one to remember!

From exciting lessons and creative projects to teamwork and leadership, we’ll take on everything with enthusiasm and pride. Whether we’re preparing for secondary school or celebrating our successes, we do it as one team – 6R strong!

Keep checking in to see our fantastic work and proud moments. This is going to be a brilliant year!

What an exciting start to the week we’ve had in Year 6! Our brand-new leavers’ hoodies arrived earlier than expected on Monday, and the excitement in the classroom was wonderful to see. The children couldn’t wait to try them on, and they all looked absolutely fantastic - so smart and proud in their new design for this year.

It’s lovely to see them wearing their hoodies around school with such pride; they’re a wonderful reminder of the special year ahead as our Year 6 pupils begin their final chapter at Brighton Avenue.

This week in Science, Year 6 had a fantastic time learning all about the circulatory system and how blood travels around the body. To help us understand the different components of blood, we carried out a fun (and slightly messy!) experiment - creating our own model of blood using food colouring, marshmallows, and cereal hoops.

Each ingredient represented a different part of the blood: the yellow liquid for plasma, the marshmallows for white blood cells, and the cereal hoops for red blood cells, rice for platelets. The children loved getting hands-on with their learning and could clearly explain how each component plays an important role in keeping our bodies healthy.

It was a brilliant, interactive way to bring science to life - and there were plenty of smiles (and a few sticky fingers!) by the end of the lesson.

What a fantastic start to the year it has been!
I’ve been incredibly impressed by how quickly the children have adapted to life in Year 6. They’ve shown such maturity, positivity, and enthusiasm - it’s been a real joy to watch them step up to the challenge. Already, they’re proving themselves to be wonderful role models for the rest of the school.

We’ve dived into the rich setting and characters of Rainplayer. The children have been learning how to use figurative language to create mood and atmosphere in their writing, and we’ve had some incredibly vivid and imaginative descriptions. We also explored how to show character emotions through dialogue and actions - some brilliant role play helped bring those scenes to life! Our History topic this term is the fascinating Ancient Maya civilisation. We started by locating where the Maya lived using atlases, before exploring their way of life, including their jobs, architecture, and religious practices. The children were particularly intrigued (and slightly shocked!) to learn about the Maya's use of sacrifices to please the gods.

In Maths, our focus has been on large numbers – up to 10,000,000! We’ve tackled rounding to the nearest million and even ventured into the world of negative numbers. It’s been challenging at times, but I’ve been so impressed by the children's resilience and determination. Their positive attitude is really paying off.

We’ve begun learning about the Circulatory System. To help understand the process, we turned ourselves into blood cells and acted out how blood carries oxygen, nutrients, and waste products around the body. It was a fun and active way to explore how our bodies work.

PE has seen us return to Netball, building on the skills learned in Year 5. We’ve focused on developing attacking strategies while also recapping the rules and working as a team; fantastic energy all round!

It’s been a busy few weeks, but such a rewarding start to the term. Well done, 6S - I’m so excited for what’s ahead!

What a fantastic and productive week it’s been in Year 6! The children have shown great enthusiasm and engagement across all subjects. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to:

This week, we’ve been working on developing our fluency and accuracy with the formal written methods for addition, subtraction, and multiplication. The children have practised setting out their calculations clearly and applying their skills to solve a range of multi-step problems. It’s been great to see their confidence grow as they’ve tackled increasingly complex questions.

In English, we’ve begun an exciting new unit on journalistic writing. The children have been reading a variety of newspaper articles to identify key features such as headlines, bylines, quotes, and the use of formal language. They’ve also started drafting their own newspaper reports, showing a brilliant understanding of how to report events clearly and objectively.

Our History topic on the Maya civilisation led to a lively debate this week! We explored different theories about what may have caused the end of the Maya – from drought and warfare to political collapse. The children worked in groups to research evidence and then presented and defended their arguments. Some very persuasive historians in the making!

In Science, we’ve been learning about the importance of keeping our hearts healthy. After investigating the effects of exercise on the heart, the children designed their own short fitness routines aimed at improving cardiovascular health. We had great fun trying out some of the workouts in class – a great mix of jumping jacks, star jumps, and creative cardio!

This week in Spanish, we’ve been learning to describe outfits. The children enjoyed practising new vocabulary to talk about clothes, colours and styles. They’ve had fun combining words to describe what they and others are wearing, both in writing and conversation.

Our focus in P.E. has been on developing our netball skills. We’ve been learning about the different positions on the court and the roles they play in a game. The children have practised passing, footwork and teamwork through a variety of drills and mini matches – showing great sportsmanship and improving their game sense.
